The religions of the Mai living in the Eastern Peninsula share many common features with the faiths practiced by their relatives in the west. This would mean the Mayic mythos is well over 12,000 years old. Within that vast span of time, this theoretical proto religion has evolved and diverged into a complex network of interrelated belief systems that have had a profound effect on the cultures of its many practitioners. The various folk religions practiced by the Mai of the Three Sisters River Valley were collectively called Uktan (i.e., ‘The Way of the Spirits’). These people were polytheists, and they worshipped an eclectic assemblage of spirits called uki. They believed there were several different kinds of spirits, though most, if not all of them belonged to one of two broad classifications.
